Carlotta is an unincorporated community in Humboldt County, California.[1] It is located 6.5 miles (10.5 km) southeast of Fortuna,[2] at an elevation of 131 feet (40 m).[1]
Carlotta is about 11 miles (18 km) east of US Route 101 on California State Route 36. Official estimates indicate that Carlotta's population is about 300 people. The town is quiet and mostly made up of pastures and forests along the Van Duzen River valley. The town enjoys wonderful weather, except for occasional winter storms and high wind gusts. It's an area that is isolated from urban California and has experienced little, if any, growth. The nearest airport is the Fortuna airport, about 7 miles (11 km) away. Carlotta is about 35 miles (56 km) away from the Humboldt county seat, Eureka, California.
Carlotta is named after Carlotta Vance, daughter of John M. Vance, who laid out the town in 1903.[2] The first post office at Carlotta opened in 1903.[2]
Carlotta was once home to the Carlotta Hotel, The Carlotta Hotel burnt down and the owners decided not to rebuild it.

Carlotta is the seat of the Cuddeback Union School District,[4] and home of the Cuddeback School, a public K-8 school located just off Route 36.[5]
In the state legislature Carlotta is located in the 2nd Senate District, represented by Democrat Noreen Evans, and in the 1st Assembly District, represented by Democrat Wesley Chesbro. Federally, Carlotta is located in California's 1st congressional district.
